Turtle Incubation Center at Six Senses Con Dao

Every year, as summer gently approaches the Vietnamese coast, one of nature’s most moving rituals begins.

Critically endangered green sea turtles return to the untouched beaches of the Con Dao archipelago, following ancient instincts passed down through generations. These waters — calm, protected, and rich in marine life — form one of their most important nesting and feeding grounds in Southeast Asia.

Gili Lankanfushi Private Reserve

Directly in front of Six Senses Con Dao, this fragile marine ecosystem finds its safest refuge — the only area in the archipelago where active protection is enforced for the small population of turtles living around the islands.

A Nesting Season Guided by Nature

The turtle nesting season in Con Dao runs from mid-March until late October.

During this time, female turtles emerge from the ocean under the cover of darkness, making their slow journey onto the beach to lay their eggs. When a turtle chooses the private beach of Six Senses Con Dao, guests are invited to witness this extraordinary moment — guided by knowledgeable hosts and observing respectfully from a safe distance — as she carefully nests, lays her eggs, and returns silently to the sea.

It is a rare privilege to watch nature unfold exactly as it has for millions of years.

Protecting the Next Generation

In partnership with Con Dao National Park, Six Senses Con Dao operates its own dedicated turtle incubation program: “Let’s Get Cracking.”

This on-site incubation center plays a vital role in safeguarding turtle eggs laid on the resort’s beachfront, as well as vulnerable nests recovered across the Con Dao Islands and transferred to the resort for protection.

Here, eggs are shielded from natural and human threats — including flooding, predators, and poaching — giving them the greatest possible chance of survival.

Through continuous monitoring of sand temperature, humidity, and incubation conditions, the program consistently achieves hatching rates exceeding 90 percent, nearly double what occurs in the wild. On exceptional days, entire clutches achieve a remarkable 100 percent hatching success.

The Magic of the First Journey

From May through December, the beaches of Con Dao come alive with one of the most emotional sights in the natural world.

Tiny hatchlings emerge from the sand and instinctively begin their journey toward the shimmering sea — a journey only a small fraction would survive without protection.

Guests at Six Senses Con Dao are invited to participate in ethical baby turtle releases, guided carefully by the resort’s conservation team. These releases take place directly on the beach, ensuring minimal human interference while allowing guests to witness the miracle firsthand.

Since 2018, guests have helped release more than 30,000 baby turtles, each one representing hope for the future of the species.

A Moment That Changes You

To watch a newborn turtle reach the ocean is to witness resilience, vulnerability, and the power of nature in its purest form.

Many guests describe the experience not simply as unforgettable, but as life-changing. It is a powerful reminder of our connection to the natural world and of the responsibility we share in protecting it.

Luxury with Purpose

At Six Senses Con Dao, sustainability is not an initiative — it is a philosophy.

Through meaningful conservation programs like Let’s Get Cracking, the resort proves that true luxury lies not only in beauty and comfort, but in protecting what truly matters.

An escape here offers more than rest and relaxation — it offers the rare chance to become part of a living legacy.
